This course provides an introduction to the design, evaluation, management, construction and preservation of pavements. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) 1993 pavement design procedure, as used by many agencies in Canada is covered along with an introduction to the AASHTOWare Pavement ME mechanistic-empirical method. The primary design, specification and construction factors that contribute to the long-term functional and structural performance of pavements ranging from parking lots to municipal roadways, airports and major highways are discussed. The course will focus on flexible pavements (asphalt concrete and surface treatment) but will also cover rigid (concrete) and permeable (asphalt, concrete and paving stone) sections.
